The semester has come to an end, and so has the Room With a View studio. I have learnt a lot in my time in the studio this semester and had a great time doing it.
I picked the studio because I had always been interested in radio but didnt know where to begin, what it involved and if I would really like it. The only way to satisfy this curiosity was to study it.
Initially, discovering that we had to do a 10 minute feature piece shook me, but then finding out we would go live to air on a proper radio station scared me straight, but mostly I was excited about the oppurtunity that I was given. In the end the feature I co-created is something I’m beyond proud of, it’s satirical, funny and engaging. The experience that I gained at RRR is something I would never have gotten the oppurtunity to gain anywhere else. I learnt from professionals who had been in the industry for years and that is something I truly appreciate and cherish.
My group for the semester, Amy, Georgina, Elle and Nicole was great. I became friends with the girls, we had laughs together and worked really well as a team. We werent scared to throw around suggestions and help eachother out, but we also enjoyed spending time together. Working in an editing suit for 6+ hours really creates a bonding experience like no other. It might be the lack of sunlight and desperation to finish the piece and also be proud of it, but I like to think it was the connection. I’m glad I got to meet them and create the work I did with them.
Having a tutor like Bruce was very educational because he had experience and had been in the industry for many years. His stories were hilarious to listen to and he was a very personable tutor. This was beneficial for me because I wasnt afraid to put myself out there or ask questions that might be percieved as silly. Having Sam there was a real treat aswell. He’s quite young which made him easy to talk to but he’s a consummate professional at what he does, he worked really hard for the entire class and made sure that we were given the support we needed to do the best we could. He was helpful and understanding and those qualities really encouraged our group to succeed even when we felt like we couldnt. So thankyou to Bruce and Sam.
I’ve enjoyed this Semseter immensly and I’m sad for it to end!
