For week four’s prac, we had been set the task of interviewing a class mate just with audio, no visuals, in order to familiarise ourselves with the audio equipment. Me and my partner, Sam, decided we’d place the interview in a very silent place so that the mic doesn’t pick up any background noises, so we went to the library.
Listening Back
I have been told many times that I am a loud person, so as the interviewer I had no problems in making sure my voice was picked up by the mic, that and the fact that I was holding it. Sam on the other hand was a bit harder to hear, as he speaks at a normal human level and wasn’t holding the mic.
Our most successful recordings were of us talking, the mic picked it up better than the atmospheric noises we recorded, although thats probably the point of background noises!
Something I discovered about microphone technique was something pretty simple, but surprisingly more important than you think; either be louder or have the microphone close to the thing/person that is emitting sound.
All in all my experience with the microphone was quite fun! Embedded above is an edit of the 9 minute interview Sam and I did, edited down obviously, which i thought was quite funny. Enjoy!
