I never thought it could be so hard to find an orange jumpsuit. Our group really liked the idea of having our female lead in a dynamic outfit that stood out from the striped inmate outfits. We searched every website from Cotton On to Etsy for a suitable outfit that matched our stylistic inspiration (pictured below), but weren’t able to find anything even remotely close. In the end, I made a dash to Kmart and purchased a fluorescent orange tradie shirt, which my friend Cass was able to cut into a cardigan type collar/cape to be worn over a striped jumpsuit (also found at Kmart, the best place in the world). After calling every friend I’ve ever made to ask about orange denim shorts, I travelled all the way to Footscray (from Mount Waverley) and ransacked every shelf until I found something close to what we wanted. I then cut the shorts to make them look worn and rough around the edges, and purchased some fish net tights to complete the look. Had we had a bigger timeframe, I know Cass would’ve handmade an outfit as she is a very talented fashion student that has helped me with projects in the past. Due to our shooting schedule, we only had about a week to source everything we needed, and although it wasn’t exactly what we hoped for, in the end the orange shoulder pads really did catch the sunlight in the exterior shooting space and came up beautiful on the 4k camera. We realise the costume isn’t super realistic, but neither is our story so that wasn’t really a problem. Cass and I worked together to style Emily’s hair and make-up for every one of her outfit changes, and I believe we did the best we could have done in the time we had.
