So far, studying Media has been an enlightening experience.
I have learned that I really need to work on my time management skills (I guess I already knew that, but I was hoping I had improved since last year). What I found most challenged was keeping up with the blog posts. I am a perfectionist and I couldn’t make myself publish a post unless it had something good to say, so I kept putting posts off and ended up really far behind. I struggled with the documentation aspect of the creative process in high school as well. I did three folio subjects last year and found myself incredibly frustrated with the documentation process, as I believed it hindered my want to explore more creative possibilities because that would require extensive work in my portfolios. Although I am not a fan of the constant documentation, I do think that in the long run keeping these blogs was a good way to summarize what we had been studying, although I do wish I had formatted it much more neatly!
I know that I am a visual learner, so in lectorials what worked most for me was watching videos, viewing diagrams or images, because I can resonate with them much easier than just being talked to. I thoroughly enjoyed creating visual works in this course, which luckily for me I was able to do in each project brief (whether it be in short film or web design), and I look forward to more hands-on visual creative work in the future.
This course has allowed me to meet like minded people and study in an environment where everyone is as enthusiastic about the subject matter as I am, which has made a huge difference to my outlook on study itself. Coming from a High School environment where people complain of being “forced” to be there to an environment where everyone has worked hard to be there was such a huge change that I looked forward to, and it hasn’t let me down. I’ve made friends and some of which would call me and give me motivational speeches to continue with my blog posts, or invite me around for a marathon blog-updating session (this included a good friend telling me off every time I got distracted by Eurovision which was unfortunately timed to be aired the same time as our study session).
I thoroughly look forward to next semester, and enjoying more of what uni life has to offer!
