When I took to social media to ask if anyone was a musician who would like to collaborate on producing a music video, I didn’t expect many to respond. To my surprise, three bands and four solo artists contacted me within hours of my post going up.

Unfortunately, some of these musos didn’t quite understand what was on offer. This meant that a lot of my email chains went like this:

“Yeah I’d love to make a video for my song. ”

“Perfect, could you please send through the file and we will have a listen and get back to you. ”

“What file? ”

“The recording of the song.”

“Oh lol I don’t have a recording yet”

While this was frustrating, it helped aid in the elimination process. Ultimately it came down to choosing between two songs: a jazzy track by eight piece soul/funk band “The Traffs” or an alternative sounding track by punk/rock band “The Trepids”. For me, the choice was obvious. While there was great potential for both songs, The Trepids as a band seemed very unorganised which would not be helpful with our short time frame. I don’t really like their genre of music, but that was not my deciding factor as I tried to remain as objective as possible. My group listened to both songs repeatedly and brainstormed some ideas and potential directions for both songs. In the end, it was decided that not only did we have more artistic control with The Traffs, but we all preferred their song and acknowledged that it was one we could repeatedly listen to. The Traffs were also much easier to coordinate with: the friend who contacted me in the first place lives literally five houses down from me. The Trepids, however, are based in the northern suburbs. Thus the decision was finalised: The Traffs were our band.
