Goals

I signed up for ‘Egg Hunting’ because I want practical experience in the field of videography. I want to build my portfolio of completed works to aid in potential employment opportunities, and make something that I can be proud of. I am a musician and music lover, and couldn’t imagine a better way to study my two favourite mediums (music and film) than by creating a music video. I am excited for the challenge of working with a client and developing a professional working relationship, and can’t wait to begin producing. As for the theory, I am enthusiastic to learn about the cultural impact the mode of music videos produce in the wider world of media, and broaden my horizons in researching techniques and styles I have never seen before.

To begin my investigations into music video production and culture, I reflected upon an example of inspiration for my work aside an example of the kind of music video that I can’t stand.

Inspiration

The music video for The Writing’s On The Wall is a quirky video that is both aesthetically interesting and entertaining to watch. I love how the artists make up the colour and geometric shapes in the environment around them. Watching this music video is like watching a series of obstacle illusions set to the tune of a whimsical indie tune.

To avoid at all costs

Katy Perry’s Bon Appetit music video is nothing short of nasty. The video capitalises on the sexualisation of Katy Perry…as food. Perry is essentially rolling around in food while uniformed men “season” and “boil” her, occasionally staring into the camera with puppy dog eyes to promote promiscuity. I can’t stand this video for numerous reasons; the visual images are gross, the overt sexualisation is uncomfortable and it ends in a weird shot of her grinning over a hastily made CGI limb pie that seems like it is supposed to be some half-hashed Game of Thrones reference.

In conclusion, I am highly motivated to get hands-on in this studio and use what I can learn from music video culture to tailor to the style that I choose to pursue. If there is anything that the above two clips have taught me it’s that taking risks and being a bit weird can work wonderfully or result in something truly tasteless (no pun intended).
