As a child, and even still today, Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland has been a huge source of inspiration for me- I love the quirkiness and stories of escapism. I have been collecting hats since I was about 10, so people often joke about me being a bit of a “Mad Hatter” while my tendency to daydream meant that I was likened to Alice. I have included subtle hints at Carrol’s work in my portrait- the photos are taken of my Alice in Wonderland themed pocket watch in various environments that represent my wonderland. The video and audio recordings capture the stories, art and music I use as an escape and represent the fields of creativity that interest me in particular. One recording in particular is again of one of my wonderlands which instead of being a physical place this time is a collection of books, games and movies that I love to immerse myself in. The quote is from Carrol’s protagonist, which my best friends read as part of my eighteenth birthday speech, insisting that it “sounds like something I would say”.
