Reflection

With my last three studies I have found that my creative process has changed quite a lot since the start of this semester. For example, with study 7 I knew exactly what I wanted to create because I was not too happy with my assignment 3 work. So in my head i thought that if i wanted to create a piece of work that I was truly happy with how was I going to go about it? So I had set out a few plans and ideas for how to achieve what I wanted to within a certain time frame. I also think that now that I have been using Max for this whole semester I truly realise that I can create anything that i want, where as in the start of the semester I had no confidence to create things that i wanted to because i just kept thinking that i was being too ambitious. I also think that with assignment 4 my work is a lot more polished than what i have been creating from the start of the semester, because I have been looking for other source of information in order to create the work that I want, not just solely relying on Camille to help me out. I also think what helped me with these studies is the fact that it was the last one for me, so deep down i really wanted to create some work that i was proud of, rather than submitting stuff that i was not 100% happy with. I think that the way i go about creating my work is still somewhat similar to the start of the semester, which is to keep the idea simple enough so that it is achievable but interesting enough to differentiate myself from my peers. The biggest difference that I have made from the start of the semester compared to now is creating a plan for my work. For these studies I created a plan of what i wanted and how i was going to do it. I think that this helped a lot because it set me on a path that was more direct, and I spent less time procrastinating at my desk. But i think that all of these things occurred because my skills in Max has just come such a long way from when we first started using the software. Actually having confidence in Max has made my time with it a lot more enjoyable as i don’t stress over whether or not I can actually do something with what I’m given. As this semester comes to a close I feel as if I can truly do anything within Max which is a great feeling. What I’ve learned about the techniques about interactive art making is that you should never doubt your self, or your work. For me, especially in the start of the semester I feel as if doubt was my worst enemy. I was always seeing other peoples work thinking it was so much better than mine because my ability was not as good as theirs. But once that self doubt was gone I started focusing only on my work, And not someone else’s because at the end of the day their work does not effect the quality of my studies. I also learnt about the simplicity of interactive art. What i mean by this is that even if an idea seems really simple on the surface, it does not mean that it wont be as good as something more interesting. I kept trying to think of ideas outside of the box, but i realised that it doesn’t even matter what your idea is, because you will never know if its a good idea if you don’t even try to create it. Overall I think that even though my skills in Max has come a long way, there is still more for me to learn. What has been a huge help for me is looking online for tutorials for new things, and I feel as if I have only learnt a small bit of what Max truly has to offer. And I know that if i keep looking further into tutorials or forums, I will end up developing my skills even further. Looking back at these three studies I think its easy for me to see how much I’ve improved comparative to the rest of my work. I was able to rely less on Camille and do things more independently which I was not able to during the start of this semester.

Study 8

For my final study I wanted to re use the kslider which I used in my first assignment. I struggled to come up with an idea to incorporate the kslider in a way which would engage the user for a long period of time. So what I decided to do was to use the kslider to trigger a video depending on what key was pressed. This idea was simple to make so I also added some video effects where it will skip frames in the video depending on which part of the kslider is pressed. This work turned out okay in my opinion, but I feel as if I could have implemented some other things to manipulate the video more but I couldn’t really think of anything else to add. I think that this was one study where a simple idea almost made me overthink of what else I can add to engage more with the audience comparative to my last few studies

Study 7

For Study 7 I wanted to take the idea of creating and making my own audio visuals which i tried to do in the last assignment. What i did for this study was create my own 3d world within max to accompany an audio track. This study turned out to be quite challenging for me, even with following an online tutorial, I still ran into issues where max would not recognise certain objects or messages. I spent most of my time on this study and I think this is my best work so far. This work does exactly what i set out to achieve, and I think visually it turned out really well. In comparison to my last assignment I think that this work shows how far my skills in Max has come which is a great feeling

Study 6

For this study I wanted to take Georgia’s major project and add my own little twist to it. The original idea from Georgia i thought was really cool. What it did was take audio and create a bunch of random shapes and objects into a little window. It was really fun to play around with but i thought that it would be even cooler if i added a fast paced audio track to it. So that is exactly what I did. I decided to add a Flume song to the original work and I thought it turned out really good. I only had do to a few small things in order for this to work, and I think that over all the end product turned out really well. The only issue that I came across was sometimes the audio track seemed to not always play, and i was not sure if this was a driver issue or an issue with the piece of work itself
