In class today, we discussed the highlights and lowlights of our fundraiser held the week before. We had spent the last few weeks, planning and putting this together. I was working on decorations with Alana & Matilda, trying to make the Media Portal cozy & comfortable for the guests attending our fundraiser. Our DIY skills had to come into play for this.
Some of the positives from the fundraiser were:
- We made about $60 – $80 pure profit. It isn’t much but it’s something, which is a good start.
- Ben & Arthur was actually hysterical but at the same time, a terrible film. Hence why it was enjoyable by everyone that was there. I could not stop laughing, it was so bad yet so good.
- The people that showed us appreciated what we had done with the space and enjoyed themselves!
On the other hand, here are some of the negatives (in my opinion):
- the Media Portal is a public area and wasn’t completed closed off for us. So whilst the screening was going on, there were people dancing just down the corridor from us and their music could be heard when the movie was playing which was annoying.
- We didn’t have enough money to properly decorate the space or rent out a proper screen. Instead, we used a bedsheet as our cinema screen. Although yes, it did work but when it came to watching Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, their skin colour was off so the Martians did not look green.
- We didn’t spend enough time getting content out via our social media platforms to promote this fundraiser. Therefore, lacking the number of guests turning up.
- I felt like there were less people after Ben & Arthur ended and not keen for Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. In my opinion, the screening should’ve started with Santa Claus and ended with Ben & Arthur.
- I feel like not being able to hire security was probably our biggest downfall. This is because, we would’ve been able to serve alcohol & probably able to attract more people. Also, they would’ve been able to barricade and tell the dancers to turn down their music or go elsewhere to practice as they were disrupting our event.
Overall, these issues will be taken to account for and not to be repeated for our actual festival held at the end of May!
