Assessment 2: Reflecting on Class Exercises.

Make The Bed: Reflection.

Make The Bed.

This exercise required us to make our bed. It seemed like something so simple but honestly, I was somewhat struggling to come up with ways to shoot this simple yet daunting class exercise. Reason being that there were so many ways to come up with something creative and interesting or different. To top it all off, we had a day to shoot it. I don’t thrive well under pressure but I did the best I could. During my pre production, I wanted to use a time lapse to show the process and some slow motions but due to the size of my room, I had to work with what I have. Secondly, I live in a furnished apartment so it already came with the furniture in the room. As much as I wanted to move things my desk or bedside table around, I couldn’t due to lack of space. The constraints stated that the camera has to be still which I thought sucked initially but then I live alone so by not having an extra set of hands did not help. Although, if we did have another day or two, I would have asked a friend to help me shoot whilst I give the direction for camera angles and the shot size to look as if me making my bed was appealing. One shot that was in the sequence required me to place the tripod on the bed and be completely still as I moved the teddy bear. That shot was challenging because I had to not move whatsoever because the slightest move would’ve toppled the tripod down. If there was something I could’ve done to make it better or improve was to ask a friend to help me shoot it because I would be able to direct him/her and also get extra input as to if it should be done at a different angle or reposition my body etc.

Lenny: Exercise 2A.

Lenny: Exercise 2A.

This in-class exercise was done in groups during week 2. I volunteered to be the actor so I didn’t get to see how the shots turned out until I started playing around during the post production stage. Quick positive from this class exercise is that my group members (Margo & Rosie) were really good and gave me criticism to make the character’s action better than the previous. Moving onto post production, at the end of this shot (below), I was placed on the right side and exited screen right but the next scene, I go from right to left, which breaks the continuity (I think that’s the right word). Personally, I like the bluey hue/coldness because the character is in struggling and in pain which is emphasised with the exposure. The one thing I’d probably change is the location. We decided to shoot on the small alley behind RMIT Info Corner, which led onto LaTrobe St., loads of cars & people walking up & down the pavement, which was annoying because they kept staring at me acting.
