Today’s lectorial was based around the idea of how we, as students, are becoming media practitioners. Reflecting is a part of practice. Why do we reflect? Having watched a 20 minute video clip by Cal Newport, he discussed the idea of how people follow their passion and make a living out of it. It’s ironic how our parents and people around us tell us to follow our passions and dreams, do not regret not doing what you love when you die, but he suggests that we do the exact opposite. His talk discusses how he doesn’t agree with an idea that the American culture is obsessed with the idea that you can only be satisfied in life when you follow your passion and he went to explore what the ideal career strategies are.

His theory does have some points that I agree with. On the other hand, I suppose that regardless of the struggles, people continue to follow their passion and eventually, will achieve their goal. As mentioned, if you don’t have preceding passion, you’ll struggle to ‘follow your passion’. Therefore, his theory is rather dubious in my opinion.
