During this class we had a little more time to edit our final pieces, but we also had the opportunity to share our work with Robbie and other students to get a little bit of feedback.
Robbie really liked where I was going with this project but he also expressed that I hadn’t considered the space I was exhibiting in, and this was clear through the structure of my work.
The way I had structured it was perfect if it was something you could watch the whole way through, but what Robbie made clear to me was that not everyone will stop and watch it the whole way through. Some people may be passing by and only catch a snippet, other people may have stopped to watch it half way through, but my work can and should still make an impression and be understood from just a snippet. Even the sound of my clip will be detached from the video and out of time, but it is important that I make my work fit with the place I am exhibiting.
The other thing I raised with Robbie is how in some of my clips the models are smiling and giggling, and these cant be edited out. This is because the paint created a sense of performance through liveness. Once the paint was on it couldn’t come off and I needed to record the process of it going on. This process was not reversible, but in this I have captured something even better than I was hoping for. Rather than having the static look of a blank stare, I was able to capture something much with much more depth, something I didn’t plan for…realness.
Up to now I had a pretty clear idea on how I wanted my whole piece to look, and I think I got a little caught up in the concept of my work and its plan. I didn’t leave room for the natural to occur and I also didn’t take into consideration the space as much as I should have.
In a way I have become attached to my work and want to be able to express my work in multiple contexts. This is why I have decided to make 2 edits. The first will be for the purpose of this exhibition, something that will be perfect for its context, but I will also create another edit which I can add to my portfolio of work. I feel that this way I can meet the requirements of the assessment but also meet the requirements I had set for myself.
