week 3

In this week tute we go in depth about the preparation of our individual interview assessment and the radio show. Bruce gave us extremely useful advice in terms of how to construct a professional interview. First thing we have to remember when constructing the interview is to use non-verbal gesture to send message to the interviewee and strictly do not use verbal message such as ‘yup’ or ‘yes’ or ‘uh huh’ to show the interviewees that we’re listening. Secondly, avoid words such as: ‘like’, ‘guys’-when referring to the audience and hesitation ‘uhm, ohm’ and tongue twister as well. Furthermore, of course we should prepare our interview questions, but use it as a guidance only to make the interview follows your story angle. And if the interviewees say something out of topic, try to brainstorm questions that spin the conversation to your angle. We should also consider the place to do the interview as well. For example, if you interview an musician from a orchestra, we shouldn’t conduct the interview in a butcher house, right? Choose place that you can catch the right ambience for your interview. Of course this rule only apply to documentary only, not the kind of interview that you would put on air live in the 3RRR show. Nevertheless, to be honest, no matter it’s a prerecorded interview for the radio show or the documentary or not, I prefer to conduct it at a quiet place, after that I would record the ambience later after the interview and put it over the interview using our sound editing tools. Sometimes it’s really annoying when you can’t adjust the noise level of background sound when recording an interview at a noisy, public place.

Below is a list for what to be presented in the radio show:

  • Theme
