This week’s symposium was interesting but challenging at the same time. We tackled the argument whether or not technology is independent from culture and art. I agree with Betty that technology and art/culture have a close relationship with each other. It can be seen in this week’s reading :”Books without pages-Novels without endings”.
Douglas stated that interactive narrative authors are surprised by the fact that interactive narrative can be able to provide heaps of possible versions of the stories, some of which the authors themselves have neither anticipated nor seen. This makes me thinking about the question as mentioned above. Well, this interactive narrative is obviously a strong argument that against the fact that technology can be developed separately from art and culture. It is clearly that both art and technology reinforce each other. Technology is developed based on human’s interpretation of art and culture. For example, we use art to design webpage, based on our preference. On the other hand, technology also promote the development and renovation of art, or in this case, literature. Technology assists in promoting creativity and thus the improvement of art. Not to mention the benefit of globalization brought to us by technology, so that different cultures can be acknowledged globally
