Studio Reflection

  1. In what ways do you hope your screenings/exhibited/screened work (whether individual or group produced) engaged its audience and communicated a key concern of the studio?

I hope our work really communicated our interest into colour temperature and white balance. Overall we wanted to showcase how these two important aspects of lighting can really effect or be a part of a basic scene and I think we achieved that through both our first and second pieces. Maybe more blatantly through our first piece, but in the second piece we really dove into colour temperature and expanded on a weekly activity we did in class where were trying to find a similar exposure despite having different colour temperatures within an exterior and interior location.

  1. Imagine you are going to keep working on that media piece (e.g. to screen it somewhere else like a festival, or develop it in to a different kind of work, and so on) – what would be the core things you would want to improve and extend and why?

If given time and resources, I would of loved to have shot on a better day to really encapsulate the differences in colour temperature between the outside and inside shots. It would of really showcased a bigger difference and maybe communicated more clearly the ideas about colour temperature we were trying to get across. I’d also probably like to go in with a better script or idea to be able to showcase the difference a bit better within the scene, and I think taking the time to find a better location would really have helped with this.

  1. Reflect on an aspect of two other students/group’s media work at the event in terms of specific insights they produced about a key idea addressed by the studio?

Eleanor, Jagger and Noah’s work was really executed well and was a really solid piece that stood out from the rest of the studio. It was a really basic scene shot entirely in a car, but the shot composition, lighting and editing was executed really well to create a really well done scene. Their goal was to light the inside of a car and in my opinion I think they did it really well, purely softly lit with a really nice colour grade made the final product that was screened really nice.

Terence, Tully and Joseph’s group was another one that really stood out, their investigation into silhouettes was really cool and insightful. When I was viewing their work I was really trying to understand how they logistically got the shots they did and how they lit them because they were so well executed, and had such strong colours. I feel like their work communicated a lot about lighting and just the endless possibilities that are available within a singular shot.

  1. How did being part of an audience at an event like this impact your experience of your own and other’s work?

It made me really appreciate everyone’s work for the semester, I think seeing the final product on a cinema screen makes a really big difference. Being a part of the audience gives a sense of community that is really gratifying at the end of the semester. It’s also really good to see the progress the groups have made over the semester from their first piece to their second investigative piece. It’s definitely given me a lot of different ideas and food for thought going into future projects.
