Investigative Piece #2

After receiving feedback from our first presentation and video piece we decided to go in a different direction for our second video, investigating colour temperature between outside and inside for a basic scene. We filmed in two locations at RMIT today, both in and outside. Again going in with little to no preparation besides an idea, today went a lot smoother than I really anticipated considering how the last piece went. The parameters/limitations we set for ourselves for this piece was to use no physical lights, to see how we could change or alter colour temperature with bounce boards, cutters and diffusion sheets. At first when we were configuring the logistics of the scene and playing around with the available lighting this seemed quite challenging as our shots were kind of weather dependant and today was overcast and rainy. But as per usual Melbourne standards, the sun came out and the weather cleared for us during filming so we could get some stuff done outside as well.

We got a total of four shots both inside and outside, we used a blocker behind Chloe’s head to block the outside light from coming in as well as a bounce board to get some light onto her face. For my shot inside we diffused the two of the ceiling lights one with 461 diffusion paper folded over twice, and a piece of paper for the other one. We also bounced light off two different ceiling lights to get a better look on my face. For the outside shots, it was obviously a lot harder to control the light with a bouncer and a cutter. At the time we shot the weather had cleared but it was still a bit overcast, despite this James was still able to use a bounce board to get some effect on my skin. It was extremely noticeable to see the difference between the shots from outside shots compared to both of the inside shots, which was the aim of our experiment.

This shoot felt a lot more collaborative, and dynamic as we all had a say and got to make decisions on what we were doing, so I felt like we worked really well as a group today. I think the outcome of our experiment will be seen as we start to piece the shots together in post-production. I forgot to mention that we actually had to record some audio, and get some sound scape noises to fill the gaps and make the scene feel more realistic and I guess seem more legitimate. This was also fun because it added another element of professionalism I guess to what we were making instead of just playing around with the lighting and made it more of a wholistic scene.
