Colour Temperature Exercise

The colour temperature exercise, for me personally was really fun and enjoyable and prompted the idea for our first investigative video piece. We decided to film in building nine because there is different LED(?) coloured lights that run throughout the building that actually change colour which we thought would be really interesting to play around with if someone walked into the coloured light from an uncoloured one.

We filmed a few different takes changing up the shot in a few different ways whether that be modifying the way I walk, the camera angle and position etc. I feel like some shots were successful in showing the difference between walking between two spaces and getting some of that different colour temperature on my face, but some definitely didn’t get the look I was envisioning. The last take was definitely successful as you can see the colour change as I move from behind the door to through it in these pictures.

For me this is what I envisioned when we set off to film the activity so reviewing the footage and seeing that made me feel really great. And also helped re-enforce my original idea to investigate it further within one of the investigative pieces, which Jonah Chloe and James were also keen on. One thing we did struggle on when filming this was trying to find an exposure that matched both spaces, before I walked through the door and then after. Jonah as the camera operator got it working after a few takes and block throughs which was really good too.

Overall this activity was really insightful into a few things for me, one that you can bring just a quick glimpse of a vision to life, and two the difference that colour temperature can have whether you’re moving from one light source to another – or just inside to outside. Reviewing everyone else’s footage made it clear that we all struggled with the same sort of things, getting an exposure that matched both spaces, and trying to capture the difference on the face of a subject.
