Week Six Reflection

Since beginning this studio six weeks ago I’ve begun noticing a lot of various things with lighting that isn’t strictly related to film or photography but just generally throughout everyday life. This has been really interesting I guess looking at spaces, rooms and environments that I’m so accustomed to in a different way. One example is the lighting in my house, specifically in my bathroom, in comparison to my kitchen. The rooms are technically speaking beside each other divided by a wall, however the lighting at any given time is different in each space despite the windows being less that one metre apart. I’ve realised this is because of a specific glaze over the bathroom window diffuses the light and inadvertently effects the tone of it in comparison to the clear window in the kitchen. Another thing I’ve noticed within my home is seeing the light bounce off the white walls within the different spaces and provide more fill and inevitably light within the space.

Another example would be whenever I see photos taken by friends and family that have been posted to social media websites, I feel more comfortable in making a decision that something is over or under exposed. Whereas in the past I’ve been very unsure and confused about exposure in photography and videography, so I definitely feel as if I’m starting to grasp and apply these concepts that we have covered in class within my own personal life and experiences. And I feel really great about this, because having an eye for these things is something that has held me back from certain aspects and roles of project work in the past. Going forward I hope I can continue to build upon what I already know and learn more to get to a point where I’m comfortable and confident applying these concepts to projects and see them throughout everyday aspects of my life.
