Today in class we did a walk-through of the filming of a scene on a set, I was an actor throughout the activity but still learnt a lot about the process of shooting a proper scene as well as the responsibilities that different roles play. Before completing this activity I had very little idea about the technicalities and intricacies that specific roles on a film set play, because most of the project work I’ve done at uni in the past has been a lot smaller groups, so condensed roles trying to learn as we go. After doing this activity in class I feel a bit more confident about the responsibilities that would be expected of me if I was placed in various positions, e.g. director, camera operator, gaffer.

Some key points I took away from this activity is the importance of blocking, and walking through a scene before shooting because it can quickly identify problems with lighting, the space and potentially even the camera location and set up. All of these elements effect each other and the smoothness and quality of the shoot, and are all crucial in ensuring that the crew capture the best possible footage on the day of shoot. Despite knowing and learning all of these things through this activity, I’d really like the opportunity to take on a different role in the next classroom activity. I’ve realised for the first six or so weeks I’ve acted almost every week and haven’t had much time behind the camera, or doing lighting etc. This is something I know I need to work on because I hesitate a lot to speak up in class when I want to try something different, I think this is a confidence thing but again it’s something I’m going to try and work on over the next few weeks.
