Today we did a variety things in class, but I would like to focus my reflection on when we reviewed the footage of our in class activity from Tuesday as well as reflect upon the experience as a whole. The activity to re-create the natural light from one window from artificial lighting was an interesting one and definitely a challenge. Being the actor/model of the activity was fun however it makes it a bit hard to comment on what different changes made to the lighting made at the time. Reviewing the footage makes it a lot more clear the difference adding gels and bounce can create on a subject.
The natural light from the singular window is extremely soft because it was an overcast day which didn’t produce any hard light. Which is very clear upon reviewing the footage, however soft the light is a very dim shadow is created on my face. And it is worth nothing the shadows created in the background from various c-stand and equipment we had set up around the classroom.
Within the second clip its instantly clear that the lighting is artificial as there is a much more prominent shadow across my face and the light is very directional compared to the original natural lighting which has much more fill. The light is also brighter than the original clip which makes it feel more artificial.
There isn’t much difference between the second and third clips besides the addition of a fill light which is attempting to alleviate the artificial spotlight look that the 2k Freshnel created in the second clip. The third clip in my opinion doesn’t accurately replicate the original shot because there is more luminance throughout the whole shot. The light is inherently brighter and more luminant as it hits my skin as well as the wall in the background. Ways this could potentially be modified more to re-create the original shot would be (if space permitted) to the bounce the light from further away and put more distance between me and the light to create a softer look or potentially try to diffuse the light more to get it that tiny bit dimmer. Despite this I do believe that the third clip is the closest out of the two to the original lighting source.
