This is our week four horror sketch which I have entitled distorted, it is a concept enabling us to explore the inherit or possible consequences that technology can have in manipulating what we consume and the idea of suicide contagion.

Our protagonist (Isaac,) receives a Skype call from his friend (Sophia) and a conversation ensues, however we discover that Isaacs interpretation of the conversation is all in his head or manipulated to what he believes Sophia is saying. (Is this manipulated by his own head, or by the technology?)

When we began brainstorming this idea we were trying to think of ways that we could use a camera that had a purpose which was the constraint placed on the piece, which is why we have used webcam footage or screen recordings. When we were brainstorming this idea it made it feel very simple to shoot and that it’ll be easy to edit, however this was not the case for filming. After trying to piece together the audio and video that Sophia and Isaac uploaded to the group folder it was clear to me that filming this was not as cut and dry as we originally thought. This made editing hard because we had to piece together seperate audio and video at the exact timing, however using two different audio tracks. Also adding onto the list of issues for editing, the screen recordings of the footage was delayed probably due to wifi problems which made syncing audio even more difficult.

After piecing together all the footage I realised that something that was originally meant to be a short sketch, inevitably became almost a short film because of how long the dialogue was building up to the ‘suspenseful’ moment. Which I don’t feel like I got across in the end, if I had more time to edit this I feel like I could’ve gone in a different direction with editing that could of made it a bit quicker and maybe built the suspense a bit more.

Overall, I feel like the concept for this idea is really great but again the short time frame, and I guess not thinking about all the variables of recording really made it hard for Isaac and Sophia for filming. Which is entirely not their fault but as a group, logistics of filming is something to think about a bit better for next time

Apologies that this piece is so long.
