Editing towards new directions?

Although I’ve only begun the editing process within the last few days after sorting through all the footage, I feel incredibly rushed. Because of my wisdom teeth removal next week, and other events happening in my life, I essentially I have one to two days to finish a rough cut for editing which is very, very ambitious. After spending a few hours trying to create a direction and structure of the film through a scripted narration, it has proved really, really difficult trying to get the right words out to express how I feel yet touch on some of my research topics (Avant Garde film, and the home movie.)

Out of interest and to really break up what I was doing in premiere, I started looking into backing music to try and fit the mood and vibe of my piece. I managed to find almost exactly what I was looking for in a backing track from a creative commons website called Epidemic Sound. So I placed it into my premiere track and muted all other audio tracks to try and listen to how the music co-incited with the videos I had in the sequence. After watching the footage without all the audio and just the backing track, I actually found that I liked the film a lot more. It felt less cluttered and distracting to me which made me ultimately very confused.

The main idea I’ve had for a structure for the film was to use a narration to show my research and make the film flow. And this idea that I’ve had from the beginning  was basically shattered after watching the footage back without any audio from the tapes and narration. It has thrown a huge spanner in the work, on one hand I know that probably the best way to convey what I’m trying to say (which I honestly still don’t know at this point) would be through a scripted narration. But for some reason, I really enjoy and kind of like a lot better the muted version, I feel like you get more time and breathing space to appreciate the footage you’re seeing and hopefully let the viewer reflect on their own childhood memories like the ones playing on screen. The only problem I’m facing is how I’ll keep people interested, how am I meant to create a 3-4 minute film that is captivating and evokes emotion within the audience.

The idea crossed through my mind to use title’s over the film to guide the direction of my film, but I don’t know if it’ll be enough. I’m still trying to figure it out if I’m honest. I’m going to try and finish putting the footage to the audio as best I can and then sort out some way to well, keep people interested.
