Footage sort through

After almost six hours I’ve finally sorted through the digitised footage from my mini-DV tapes. Structuring them and sorting them into different categories was tough at first but I managed to sort them into five different sequences/categories on premiere:

  • Life events
  • Playing
  • Family
  • Other
  • Sport

The reason I sorted the footage into these different categories was because that was the main sort of events that my Dad had filmed over the years. Big events like birthdays, Christmases even my brothers Christening. My brothers and I playing around, other family members and our sporting events which included Netball and Soccer.

I really enjoyed looking through the footage because a lot of the things I don’t really remember happening. So looking at it with almost an objective perspective is really interesting as well, and trying to analyse or decipher whats ‘quality’ material to be placed in the film is also interesting. Instead of picking and choosing specific moments I organised all the footage so that I could look through all of it in case inspiration stroke to use other aspects or shots for my film.

Now that I’ve finished sorting through the footage I have the idea for a feel of what kind of film I want to create. I really want to focus on the importance of family, but also why only certain moments of life are recorded and some are not. Most of the memories that have been recorded by my Father were initially created to show to my Pop who lived far away from us but after he passed my Dad kept recording, so its really interesting as well when I look at it from that perspective.
