Week 9 Reflection

In class on Wednesday we screened everyone’s films from film project one which was really cool. I loved seeing everyone’s finished work especially after viewing rough cuts from the week prior to see the changes and modifications everyone had made. Upon watching every groups films I realised how drastically different they are in terms of narrative and direction, which is really interesting to have such a broad range of films just within our class. After viewing everyone’s films I feel like there were a lot of elements from each film that I loved and would like to improve on, or use in the future projects whether it be technically or creatively.

Technically speaking there were specific elements of almost everyone’s films that I would like to learn how to do myself in premiere pro. For example in Joel’s film Cold Waters I really loved the opening title with the video playing through the text as well as the transitions underwater. When I have time, probably over the break I’d really love to experiment and learn how to create title’s or text with a video playing behind it, as well as learn/create transitions that are really smooth between shots like Joel’s group managed to do.

From Samantha’s group I really loved the editing of the film, especially of the car crash scene. The colouring and cuts of the film was done really well in my opinion and I’d love to be able to create a sequence that uses colour in that way. I also really enjoyed unexpectedly the use of the vignette effect in the film. It’s not something you generally see very often in film these days so adding that element to their film is something I really liked, and made me reflect upon maybe using effects like this in my upcoming film project.

The last film that I really enjoyed was the “Missed Moments” film for a few different reasons. One being the cinematography and the general slow burn of the narrative. There were a lot of elements to this film that had been thought out and filmed really well. The way the group captured the landscape of the environment they were in, like Southern Cross Station, the library scene and the scenes down in Southbank were done really beautifully. I loved the use of subtitles in the film as well, I thought it added another layer to film which again is something I wasn’t expecting. So things from this film I’d really love to channel into my future work or really work on as I progress down this path are really capturing the environment I’m filming in as well as scenes, using subtitles in place of audio which is something I’ve never really thought about before because I personally am not a huge fan of subtitles in movies and television shows.

So after watching everyone’s film projects and reflecting upon my own skillset, knowledge and creative capabilities I’ve really learnt to expand my horizons and look for different opportunities in projects. I’ve got things to work on technically to increase my knowledge and skills in premiere and as well as this I’ve got ideas to reflect upon for future projects, so all in all a good week.
