Attention!

Its 7.34am and I find myself amid the morning bustle and shuffle towards the city on the dreadfully overcrowded train. I nearly missed the train with all the commotion but slipped in last minute on account of my small physic. Then the real challenge begins, finding a seat. As I was dragging my way though the crowd accidentally bumping the corner my bag into some well to do business woman and apologising, and nearly falling over another mans polished shoes, my eyes were scanning for a anywhere to take the strain off my legs. SPOTTED! A small seat in the corner isolated by a group of prepubescent school boys who seemed much to energetic for the morning.

So I sat down plugged my music in hoping to ignore them, however I found myself zoning in and out listening to their obnoxiously immature conversations about Mrs Johnson, debates about compulsory Ipads and a water slides . As I was listening to Jon Bellion’s magical “Guillotine” on repeat the lyrics of the song kept getting lost in remarks about $5 notes and hand towels, the minds of young school kids. the conversation went something like this:

Blonde Boy in broad brimmed hat: “There is no towel the size of this $5 note that could rub my face like this” (He was rubbing the I’m sure full of bacteria note on his cheeks).

Brunette Boy in broad brimmed hat: “Thats not true I have hand towels smaller at home”

I couldn’t help but draw my mind back home to my own laundry closet and think about the size of my own manchester.  Funny isn’t it that distractions around you, even the ludicrous remarks from young school boys can completely change your stream of thought. Which got me thinking, we had learnt about the difference between Hyper attention and deep attention in our Media 1 Lectorial. Hyper attention referring to being able to focus or even be distracted with various small tasks, and on the other hand deep attention being the ability to completely and utterly immerse oneself in the task they have started. On the train I was being a product of hyper attention not being able to focus solely on my own music and business, but finding my self distracted with the goings on of the life on a train. So encountering the idea of attention this week got me to realise how attention can play a major role in personality and the way humankind connect with the world and the things going on in the goings on of everyday life.
