THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA!

Tim O’Reilly (2004) explains that Web 2.0 is a community-based forum. It involves uploading and sharing content. This is how I think of the internet and the possibilities of social media. A place where user-generated content can be created, shared and added to. Social media truly challenges the old ways of community engagement and allows people from far and wide to interact.

For businesses they gain so much information on their consumers and their activities online. Information on what the consumer ‘likes’ = valuable insights for marketers and the algorithm.

I feel like businesses with a strong social media presence allows them to form a better connection with their followers. Not to mention, businesses that stay relevant by posting content not only about their products but also about relevant worldly issues tend to have a stronger following.

Marketing literature has argued that brand preference is influenced by the perception of how similar the personality of the brand is to that of the perceiver (Kassarjian, 1971). Scholars argue that using the customer self-brand congruence theory, marketers have capitalized on this to make their brands more relatable to the consumers values.  “This branding strategy is because when a consumer buys a product, he or she buys not only the functional benefits but also the reputation, prestige, symbols, and social meanings associated with the image of the brand (Levy, 1959).”

There are so many businesses that embody this theory through their social media which in turn attracts more followers and interaction with the brand. To name a few examples of brands that align themselves with real world issues; Reformation, Depop, Lush Cosmetics etc.

Having a strong social media presence alongside an attitude that cares is what makes a brand attractive on social media, it means that content can be shared as well as interacted with. Social media marketing is essential today because it uses the platforms that consumers are on, daily. Making it the one stop place to try and reach their past consumers and future consumers.

What brands do you think have a strong social media presence? What techniques do they use to target and interact with their consumers? Let me know what you think!

Great read! I think an example of a brand with a strong social media presence is Nike, who constantly post and interact with followers on their Instagram page. They also utilise influencer marketing to post about their athletes, and utilise InstaTv to post longer, more engaging videos. Finally, Nike is also in tune with contemporary trends, demonstrating their support for blacklivesmatter in their bio. I think that all of these contribute to an engaging page, which encourages people to follow Nike and engage in its feed.
Look forward to the next blog 🙂

Yeah 100%. I think it really makes a brand more respectable when they can engage with these important issues not only while they are booming in the world but also afterwards and forever. Thanks for your comment Jesse.

    Hey Naomi,

Businesses are definitely levelling up in an effort to to stay relevant. I have found this with beauty brands such as Mecca or Adore beauty that send out weekly forums of new products to try with supporting reviews from customers to advocate their products. I believe adding satisfied customer analysis has definitely encouraged me to explore the products further and keep me engaged over this period.
Great second blog post and I look forward to more!

    Thanks Indi xx
