WHY IS DIGITAL MARKETING RELEVANT TODAY?

Covid-19 has changed the world in so many ways, particularly in regards to businesses needing to really harness their online presence. Many small businesses are transitioning online to try to survive during these trying times.

Digital marketing is essential in order to be a successful business today. Most obviously, consumers are online more and more and they tend to look at their options online before purchasing something. A digital environment allows consumers to flick and choose at their leisure, weighing up and then making a purchase decision for that certain product or service. Digital marketing also helps companies to understand their audience, and gain tangible insights to help target their product.

When reflecting on why digital marketing is relevant in today’s climate, I thought back to how my Dad had to adapt his business Attractions Academy to suit the times. Originally a human resource trainer for big theme parks around the world, he has had to accept the fact that his travel plans to work with clients is simply not do-able. But instead he has developed online content for his clients where he can still coach online. Additionally, working towards rebranding and marketing his business so it can gain online attention was an important step. Purchasing Facebook ads has been one way to get his name out there, as well as creating captivating content and consistent engagement with consumers. So, that even though things are different they can still work in a digital world which is one that we are being reliant on.

Do you know any small businesses that have had to adapt or transition online during the pandemic?

Absolutely I think it’s all about adapting to the times. There is nothing worse than a business being left behind because they can’t adapt.

    Hi Naomi,
What a interesting and very relevant approach to digital marketing and its adaptability in these such uncertain times. Its great to see how your father was able to transition his predominantly travel based business, into an online coaching forum which I believe many will be able to benefit from. similarly, I have noticed that a lot of medical clinics have adopted online video meetings as a way to diagnose patients in order to avoid individuals from having to visit the clinics directly. Personally, I found this a great approach to adapting to the pandemic as many fear venturing to doctors offices during these times.
Thanks again for your first blog and I cant wait to hear more in the future.
    Kind regards,
    Indi.

Yes you’re so right. It’s so wild that thanks to technology we can have medical professional consulting patients from home. My boss from work is pregnant and is trying to navigate these consultations via video call, although it’s different it is essential that we have an optimistic approach in order to keep going with our lives. I admire the industries that are trying their best to get through these tough times.

Good read. You’re right, businesses must adapt and adopt an online presence or risk being left behind! Fortunately this technology is readily available for businesses, because I think that the impact of COVID-19 would be considerably worse is online media was not so prevalent throughout society.

    Hey Naomi,

A great first post! It sounds like your dad has reacted really well to the times. So many businesses would dig their heels in at this point and aim to fight the inevitable changes to their processes. Being able to roll with the punches and action well deliberated responses is the difference between thriving or falling behind.

I look forward to your future posts!

This is really insightful Naomi, that’s awesome that your dad was so agile and innovative in the ways he changed his service delivery. I believe that mindset needs to be more widespread among business owners of all kinds in this ever-changing (and increasingly digital) world.

His combination of content marketing and paid social is so smart! Do you believe one of the two is generally more effective or are they pretty similar in effectiveness? Curious to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for your comment Anna! I defiantly think the combo of the two work hand in hand. Just from experience, his paid marketing has attracted people he would never have got to, originally. I think that using a bit of both to boost a small business is essential. I defiantly think perseverance is key though, especially when building a following. It can sometimes be discouraging having a small following but working on it consistently can help bring valued consumers to light.

This is a great look into the current context of digital marketing. I think, more than ever, brands have had to turn to digital marketing platforms, like social media, as they no longer able to reach people out of home.

Defiantly! For some brands changing over is all about adapting successfully which can take some time but yeah once digital marketing is harnessed it’ll hopefully extend their capabilities. Thanks for your comment Sam!

    Hi Naomi
I really enjoyed reading your post and agree that businesses needed to quickly adapt to a new way of marketing their business and interacting with consumers in 2020 given the current restrictions. I too agree that many have taking their usual store browsing to web browsing prior to making a purchase, whether they had intended to buy it online or in store. Sarah
