WEEK 5|Carolyn Cartier, Manuel Castells, Jack Linchuan Qiu, ‘The acceleration of space in digital time’, Journal Management, vol. 32, pp. 62-88.

This article discussed the relations between time and technology development. About a hundred years ago, economist John Maynard believed that people will relieve themselves from the heavy work and people can enjoy more leisure time. Especially in the digital time, people can be more productivity and higher efficiency because the work can be done by machine, digital operation, even robots and so on. On the contrary, the fact is that we people are even be more busy in our work and life and we hurry up to walk, to eat, to work without enough time to relax ourselves and enjoy life freely.

This article provides evidence to explain why we have less time in this digital time. We originally think machine innovation and technology development can save many time and leave us under lower time pressure. Nowadays, however, with such fast velocity as computerization, telecommunications, and transport, people have been the slavers of time and bear great pressure from time. It is undeniable that we are more rusher in this society with abundant material resources. The findings are reasonable in some extent, however, the digital technology also help our human beings in many aspects as calculation, mass production, onerous and dirty work. So the research has some limitation in a way.

This article is useful and well-founded in my research about why time is more urgent and people are more rushed even though that digital development has addressed many difficulties and provide convenience for people. However, digital development also accelerated the pace of society and people always go after better life and abundant material resources.
