Week 4 | Cal Newport, 2012, ‘The Clarity of the Craftsman’ in So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work, NY Business Plus, ch.4.
The reading from this week is interested me and made me falls into the ponder that how should I treat my future career. In this article, Cal Newport presented two entirely different ways to people think about their working life: the craftsman mindset and the passion mindset. The craftsman mindset focuses on what you can offer the world, and the passion mindset focuses on what the world can offer you. Cal thought the craftsman mindset provides clarity compared with the passion mindset. The passion mindset made people fall into a swamp of ambiguous and unanswerable questions.
Steve Martin’s quote “be so good they can’t ignore you” was very inspired me and encourage me that whatever which job I choose in the future, the first thing I need to remember is I need to be dependable and leave behind self-centered concerns. Every little thing should do the best step by step, working hard and make me more outstanding, the process of collect enough experience will make me more confidence while facing my career. Just like Cal said, the process is important. Basic on the craftsman mindset, I am also have expected on the passion mindset, not only pay attention to my love career but also expected what the world brings to me. I mean, sooner or later your effort will pay off, and I expect what I am going to get. Also, I think to achieve the craftsman mindset I believe that you can make progress only if you are modest. Self-important won’t lead you success and will cause yourself lost control.
