Mona's Fairground

Week 8 weekend exercises reflection

This weekend I worked with Lisa and Renee shoot some ‘dialogue’ scene exercises. In Lisa’s working, I am the camera operator, as camera operator, it’s important get the idea what the director wanted, operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angels throughout a given scene or a shot. As we got the NO2 audio kit, which is not working, so we using the camera internal audio to record sound, which causes the sound not very well.

During edit Lisa’s work, some problems come up:
1.First shot, a medium close up from two actors back. The framing is in front of the door, and one actor knock the door, the other is standing beside her. I think that frame was not good, obviously the right girl is out of frame, maybe she need more closer. Also, the reflection on the door, clearly can see me in the door, very stupid mistake.
2.Second shot, cut to a close up of Polly’s head, hand-held, following her movement to the door, then a medium close up, camera tracking. The background was messy.
3.Third shot, cut to a medium close up shot, Polly open the door, good composition, camera position at the behind of them. Highlight those three actors relationship.
4.Fourth shot, hand-held, shoot from left position behind Polly, the door’s edge is in the frame.
5. Fifth shot, hand-held,tracking one girl walking to the table, camera stop, the other in the frame, then sit.
6.Sixth shot, cut to medium close up, camera position at diagonal of Polly.
7.Seventh shot, cut back of them,  i think the composition in this shot is well.
8.Eighth shot, cut back to shot 6. The table in the frame was too empty, audience may attract by the table not actors, and the background was not good.

In the scene, part of the camera angle and movement was not perfect, because when i review the edit, it looks strange, especially on shot 6 and 7, the position of the camera was not right, i think the shot 6 might position in front of those two girl, the perspective of the other to shoot. That’s points I still lack of knowledge on camera angles and movement, needs watch more and analysis more.
