Mise En Scene & Montage&Decoupage

Mise en scene,“putting things in the scene”, which includes setting, lighting, costumes, blocking, and performance. The director can use the mise en scene to achieve the goal of realism to make the scene become true.(David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson, 2012)

The setting:

The role a scene played in a film:

  1. According to the background of the film: many film scenes can tell us the background of the story, which is, telling the audience the era, background and environment of the film.
  2. According to the figure in the film: setting is mainly the object. The role of the object is to set off and reflect the people. Through the setting, we can know the mutual relation, mental activity and ideology of the people.
  3.  According to the atmosphere and environment: the setting of the horror film and the suspense film is usually some dark things. The setting of the affectional film and the comedy is usually some warm and positive things. There are some active scenes when the plot is tense. And there are some harmony and peaceful scene when the plot is ease.
  4. According to the plot: the film is the clip-art. Some scenes need to be added to make the plot fluent, which can be a connecting link to make the plot more reasonable and the story more wonderful.
  5. According to the main idea: the main idea is what the film wants to express. The scene is the main carrier. For example, there are usually some scenes of the death, pain and the field littered with corpses to show the cruelty of war. There are some happy and beautiful scenes to show the sweetness of the love.
  6. According to the special requirements of the film: for example, there are many scenes of chrysanthemum in Curse of the Golden Flower, which is made by a Chinese director Zhang Yimou. This is the special requirement of this film.

Light:

The dash area of a scene not only influences the whole composition, but also guides the audiences to notice some objects or actions.  The only way to transfer the joys and sorrows is capturing light and shadow since there is no emotion of the shot.

In the Knowing, when Lucinda  disappears, the teacher and other people only use the weak light of the flashlight but not opening the interior lights, which creates a tense atmosphere and captures the attention of audience. WhenLucinda is found in a closed room, the surrounding is dark. Only the face full of horror and the bloody hands ofLucinda are shown in our front and the audiences are brought to the unprecedented tense atmosphere. When the first disaster happens, the sky is dark and there is only the light of the fire shining the disaster scene, which makes the heart of the people full of sadness.

Costume and makeup:

In the film In the Mood for Love, Zhang Manyu wears 26 styles of cheongsam. The tailor of the structure is fit and the color is rich, gorgeous and eye-catching, which shows a woman’s elegance and loneliness incisively and vividly. In this film, the cheongsam has become a silent language. Through the conversion of the color and the change of the style, the feeling which cannot stop of the protagonist is shown to the audience from multiple levels. Meanwhile, these costumes can also directly express the main idea of this film. The proper use of the costume makes the audience more understanding of the character of the people, which has great help the audience further understand the story of the film.

Montage: The scene which is shot from different distance and angle and using different methods is permuted and combined to narrate and characterize the figure.

In the film In the Mood for Love, the scene Zhou Muyun and Su Lizhen walking by the narrow stairs and from the home to the noodle shop and from the noodle shop to the home lonely appears many times. The recurring scene is the expression of the life of the protagonists superficially. Actually, what Wang Jiawei uses is “montage techniques which lets the shot express the same content to emphasize the symbolic meaning of the content”, which is repeating montage technique. The reason why the director uses this technique at the beginning of the story is to symbolize the lonely and deserted living conditions through the scene they go up and down, in and out from the stairs to foreshadow for the extramarital affair of his wife and her husband. Meanwhile, this indicates that there will be story between the two figures.

Decoupage
Montage, découpage, mise en scène: these three French terms are central to debates around film history and aesthetics in every language, yet the precise meaning of each and especially their relationship to one another remain a source of confusion for many.
To investigate decoupage, two parts in there: one is time, another is space, those two things combined together to create a unified manner in the form of expression. I t can be used in serval ways, can be used in two continuous space described camera position connected, and two time scenarios connecting a variety of ways.
