PB 3 problems addressed

So in this week 8 media 1 tutorial, the lesson has been dedicated to our PB3 projects. I’ve completed every part of the project however my video isn’t exporting properly so today I sat down with Brian to solve this problem. We tried exporting it with different source features e.g.. H 2.624 and ticking the maximum render box. However after the lag hour wait for the export, it resulted with the same problematic outcome. The format of the shots were all different sizes and didn’t fit the frame. We then closed the project and made a new test one where we just imported a short clip with the correct settings and exported it to see if it exported correctly, this worked! So I went back onto my original edited piece that wasn’t working properly and realised that the zoom level for the entire project was set to 100% instead of fit. So I changed it to fit and every shot had changed into a smaller frame size, so I went through and changed the scale to 100 on each individual shot clip. Then exported this rendered copy and it worked!!!!! I am feeling so relieved now, knowing I don’t need to start again from scratch in order to fix this issue :))

THE AUDIENCE AND THE EDITING PROCESS EXPLORED

In the week 8 media lectorial the key ideas covered where ideas of audience from Brian and the editing process from a guest speaker.

Audiences can be either passive or active (media effects theory) and the ideas of mass culture in relation to mass audience.

Firstly who cares about having an audience?

  • Advertisers
  • Commercial broadcasters, cable networks
  • Production houses and independent program makers
  • Government policy makers
  • Social scientist/ psychologist

And that when considering TV audience that programs are designed to speak to a national audience.

Audiences nowadays multitask while viewing, watch on many different devices and are now enthused in binge watching.

Yet a new wave of audience members are the FANDOM

  • they are considered out of control, obsessive, irrational
  • online fan communities
  • activists
  • ‘fannish modes of engagement’

When talking about the Editing Process:

The most important thing to do is have your filing system downtick. Make many folders for audio, film etc. and save each work exported into the correct assigned folder this just makes your work organised and therefore easier to source.

The 3 step Process

  1. Assembly
  2. Rough Cut
  3. Fine Cut

The fandom

This week’s Media 1 reading explores the Harry Potter conference Infinitus held in Orlando. I myself am not a Harry Potter fan so I struggled to understand and connect with this reading however had a an outsider perspective to how it was important to our course. The reading reflects the strong Fandom this story has generated, evoking a sense of community. Displaying that this book series and film series have inspired and pleased this fandom. However it also causes many problems in there eyes as sometimes film cannot do the book justice or even the story cannot do the readers ideas of Hogwarts justice. Showing that the purpose of film and books is to please their audience, however they can never fully please the individual hardcore fanatic.

The Design

This weeks networked media reading covers the ideas behind design conceptions in relation to the minds psychology.

Natural signs can create natural designs through VISIBILITY, AFFORDANCE, CONCEPTUAL MODELS, MAPPING and FEEDBACK.

An appearance of a device provides critical clues in order for the user to decode the products function. With a presence of Feedback technicians are able to improve designs in order to fulfil the users wishes in how to use the product effectively. Affordances are the properties they can form interaction  between technology and the user.

PB3 Interview DOCO

Xavier DOCO

‘ Xavier Romanin- Green aged 19 has moved from the lazy seaside town Beaumaris to the hustle and bustle of Kew. However this small change has impacted his high school experience dramatically as it made forming friendships harder yet overcoming obstacles easier through his resilience. His struggles with firsts football was an obtruding problem that impacted his character yet with the help of friends, family and pure determination he had overcome this hurdle. Concluding that although it was tough, this experience shaped him into the person he is today.’

The most problematic aspect of this product was defiantly the exporting process. I struggled to export the content into the format I wanted to clearly and easily display it on Youtube. Also finding an appropriate and well suited song to be played in the background of the clips was very hard considering the music has to be copyright free. I initially struggled to condense the material I had as I had so many video clips that I had no idea how I wanted to reveal my interviewee’s story and what to include/ not include. However I  eventually produced the product in a simple and effective way that dictated Xavier’s story, proclaiming his strong message he wanted to share. What I thought was successful was the layering of different media within the film, therefore the dull mid-shot footage of Xavier isn’t shown for the entire 2 minutes, it’s broken up and more intriguing with the inclusion of sound score, still images, other filler video footage content, audio clippings and interviews from friends of Xavier’s. The video’s narrative sequence was also well done as it clearly announced to the viewer who Xavier is and reveals his story and what he has taken from it in a linear progression. I think also choosing Xavier as my subject was a smart move as I am well acquainted with him, therefore before the interview commenced and I was at the stage of writing interview questions I already had some idea of what to ask him, as I knew how I wanted this product to go. I learnt through this task of creating a portrait through film that you should go above and beyond when it comes to content. Always have too much content when producing documentaries as this will help you form many different ways to tell the story and it also ensures you have enough footage in the editing process.  Also when it comes to the interviewing stage make sure you have directed questions that are open- ended to ensure the best possible outcome for your product and for the interviewee to answer with justice. Through the making process I learnt that it is always a good idea to overlay different media in order to make your final product more interesting (no one wants to be staring at one mid- shot for the products duration), always keep the audience on their toes, through using different shots and including other aspects such as sound, images etc. Also give yourself a week to acquire all the footage and a week to edit the footage as these projects are a timely matter and just incase something goes wrong, you still have time to fix it without the need to stress. Most importantly I learnt that whenever you produce material make it interesting for the reader through different media contents and leave them with a strong message they can remember your product by (always teach your audience a lesson).

Attached is a screenshot of my completed sequence in Premiere Pro.

CRISIS

Feeling very stressed right now as I try to finalise my PB 3 my film isn’t exporting properly and I don’t know how to fix it :(( I’m trying to make sure I’ve got everything ready to go for submission however the people shown in my film keep forgetting to fill in their release forms so I feel really mean because I keep nagging them. However I’m going to ask a lecturer this week with help exporting and should be getting the forms in soon, so I’ll be less stressed shortly (lets hope so, my fingers are crossed).

more shooting exercises…

In this week’s media 1 tutorial. Another shooting exercise was conducted in order write and shoot a film and produce it without an editing process. This was a struggle for our group as we lacked our creative minds that day (being the first class back after easter break) to create a story. We also kept forgetting we couldn’t edit this story so therefore it was hard to find ways to keep the narrative flowing and introduce titles in a different approach (can’t make titles in editing). In this tute I also got to look at my peers rough cuts and Brian gave me some good advice of editing your doco to tell their story in a different way, try not to be generic.

What is standard?

This week I was struggling to form an idea to write my initative post about. However today during our Easter lunch with the extended family, I found myself arguing with my dad about Music. I told him the music he wanted to play in the background was ‘standard’ however now I think it was somewhat wrong of me to state this. Who am I to tell a person the music they like is basic and generic, when they might rebuke that they feel this way about my taste in music. Can anything be standard in media? Or do we just want to believe that the media content we immerse ourselves in is above standard?

ANIMAL COMPARISONS

In this weeks media 1 reading ‘Why Look at Animals?’, the ideas of animals before the internet etc. as machines. The connection of animal to man has been broken, they were once a dependence and seen as messengers but are now replaced with computers, iPhones etc. They were the initial productive inventions and compared to people. They are no longer thought of as our main source of communication and machine production.
