As part of my studio On The Frame, every two weeks I’ve decided to upload five frames from a film I’ve watched recently. This week I’ve chosen The Shining (1980), directed by Stanley Kubrick. After I watched this film on Saturday for the first time in a long while, it occurred to me how peculiar and translucent the narrative is. Apart from Jack Nicholson’s performance (“Give me the bat, Wendy!“), the cinematography by Kubrick speaks volumes of his creative vision. With meticulous repetition, protracted sequences, wide angles and long tracking shots often fleshing out the frame, The Shining fortifies Kubrick’s cold and deliberate camerawork without hesitation.
