After viewing L’Avventura (1960) and In the Mood for Love (2000), we were tasked with exploring elements of motion, movement and the rules of continuity. Sketching and drafting some ideas, I was drawn to using lighting and the elements that it can concurrently alter. While I was limited to the inside of Building 9 due to the weather, I quickly envisioned a brief sketch and tried to execute it.
Looking at lighting and how it is contained in the frame, I placed Jess in the corner of an empty classroom. For one thing, I wanted to focus on not only lighting but also repetition, space and setting. Attempting to explore the element of repetition in the frame, I placed desks around her. Next, I asked Jess to turn her screen brightness to the full extent and flickered the lights on/off.
Directing the viewer to the center of the frame, I use the desks to focus on Jess and draw the viewer in. With an illuminated frame, it quickly diffuses, inverting the lighting and detail to Jess’ hihglighted face.
