I need to narrow down my points! After going through a number of consultations through out the semester and all my ideas/concepts are very broad! I tend to overthink and over analyse stuff. Note to self before next consultation: Narrow down!
Feedback from Adrian:
#2 Cooking/Taste
Idea too broad, need to narrow and focus on 1 taste. For example: sweet ( what are the effects of sweet/sugar in our body? )
Visuals: The amount of sugar consumed in a day?
Audio: chain of effects of sugar biographically? sugar rush, sweet tooth, sugar high, low blood sugar?

The aim of this video is to explore the relationship between humans and their phone. I’ve listed down a list of application that I’ve stalled in my phone. I then highlight the frequently used application. The list reflects what a phone does and how it contribute to my life. The initial plan was to understand my phone but I end up noticing my needs and how dependant I am to it. The list could be divided into emotional and physical needs. I would like to explore the relation between the essential support and needs of my phone and how my phone contribute to my needs. The visual will show structures /systems that support my phone’s operating system and the audio will list a list of emotional and physical needs that my phone provides.
Method:
Visuals- Things that structure and supports the phone system- Satellite dish, radio waves, wifi broadband, power, cable lines..
Audio- My emotional and physical needs (list ) with sound from the phone ( notifications, vibrating, SIRI’s respond to questions ) –
Emotional: Social, connection, content, image, informations, dependant, knowledge, stay in touch with friends, stay up to date with current news and events, fill up spare time, share opinion ( voice), meet new people, share and exchange experiences, get advices Physical: Alarm clock, Calendar, Tramtracker, Navigate directions, weather, menstrual cycle, health app- monitor fitness ( number of steps/day)

I would like to explore relations between memory and taste. Research shows that there is peculiar connection between taste and memory. It was not until about the 1920s that it became the object of rigorous scientific studies. So it should come as no surprise that it is only within the past few decades that we have started to gain a better understanding of its actual physiological basis. This allows us to explain, in detail, how taste is detected in the mouth by certain receptors and converted into nerve impulses that are then forwarded to specific centers in the brain. The neural cells in these centers carry out the final calculation and convey a message about the food.
Taste are not limited by the description of words/language. For example, slow-cooked reflects tenderness of the meat. I would also like to explore the contrast of taste by showing different images of food and narrating the contrast of that particular food. For example visual shows Hot tea and audio narrates brain freeze?
Consulted Adrian today, most of my concept are too broad.. I think I overcomplicated the assignment.
Feedback from Adrian:
#1 Iphone
-Interesting points on emotional and physical needs ( need to list down a list of emotional and physical benefits)
-Visuals: Satellite networks, Cables, Connections, What the phone sees
-Audio: List of emotional and physical benefits
#2 Tasting
Just focus on Tasting alone.Concept too broad
- Object ( Iphone )
I wrote down a list of applications that I have in my phone, I tried to understand my phone better but I end up noticing my lifestyle by highlighting my frequently used applications. With the diagram above, I realised the applications I used can be divided into emotional and physical needs. How well do we understand a person? Do we know it as well as a phone knows it’s owner? This experiment gives the phone agencies to understand a person, a machine’s understanding might be better than a human’s understanding of a person.
Method:
Video- Visuals will show a list of things each application does, why is it important? why is it used frequently? ( for example: Facebook- connect with friends, news updates)
Audio- sound from the phone ( notifications, vibrating, SIRI’s respond to questions ) – need to write down a list of sounds produced by the phone.
2, Cooking/Tasting
I’ve wrote down a list of what it takes to prepare a good meal. Tasting is important because the final taste of a dish are affected by a lot “actors”. We need fresh ingredient to produce a good dish. I would like to focus on environmental footprints on the food we consumed. For example- 2500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of meat.
Method:
List of things that affects a good dish- The chef( The chef’s experience) , the ingredients(lack of ingredients, additional ingredients-ingredients adds on to flavour) , the freshness of the ingredient( texture of ingredient) , the method of cooking, time, heat, the quantity, different types of kitchen hardware used ( stainless steal etc.)different methods of cutting- different knives used- different texture of the ingredient. Ingredient- how fine/coarse affects the final taste. freshness- high demand of fresh produce- meat- causes high water pollution ( Cowspiracy)
3.Quote
Quote: A poetic approach to documentary can also be conceived of as a process of wondering (p.143)
Outcome of the video – The potential of this form is that the openness of structure may allow room for critical engagement and an experiential knowing. There is room for the agency of the self and a talking back to the work in the spaces that exist between the elements of the list ( p.147)
IDEA – Montage: overlaying videos and footages of an object + things that are related to the object + things that are not related to the object (a process of wondering), relation to things that might not be related or often thought of. For example (Coffee and plate)?
Object: Coffee grounds
Direct relations: Coffee, addiction, adrenaline, beans, plantation, east timor, flavour, milk, white, black, sugar, soy, caffeine, clock, ticking, sleep, body, reactions, dripping, control, cold, warm, brew, stovetop, french press, cafes,
not directly related: kitchen, car, petrol, sports, acting, fight, conscious, crash, mixed up, laptop, weights, hanger, jacket, boots, receipts, radio, social media, steamer, wood, leather, rice, dreams, coins,
Sound: use direct related sound consistently
Video: start off with direct related videos to non-direct related videos
Complexity, flux and webs of connection
Out of all the readings I’ve read through the semester, my favourite reading is Frankham’s reading- Complexity, flux and webs of connection. This reading sums up what I’ve learnt in this semester. Hence, I will be using quotes from this reading for my final assignment. Below are a list of quotes that I am interested in working on.
Quotes about Listing
- The application of a list-like structure has facilitated space for paths of connection to be reimagined thereby creating more complex and nuanced interpretations of the material.(p.138)
- -he list can motivate individual processes of synthesis and provide the means for documentary to embrace fragmentation, provisionality and complexity(p.140)
- The list can also inspire thought that follows the structure of memory, impulse and flases of association. The structure of the list acts as mnemonic device that helps us to recall what we have already seen in the linear presentation of material.(p.141)
- With the list , the possibilities for structure are not necessarily occurring in a linear manner.(p.145)
- The list becomes a way of reshuffling the world, almost putting into practice Tesauro’s invitation to accumulate properties in order to bring out new relationships between distant things and in any case to cast doubt in those accepted by commonsense ( Eco, 2009) (p.146)
- Each item on the list can trigger a sense of memory, an imagining , a concurrence or a questioning (p.147)
Quotes about Poetic approach and Montage
- A poetic application of associational form creates relationships between element that are more often felt than thought (p.139)
- Montage brings element into contact and thereby gives rise to new meaning out of each combination(p.142)
- A poetic approach to documentary can also be conceived of as a process of wondering (p.143)

A) Single Thing You Have That Matters To You
Wasn’t clear with my direction of this project, so I’ve decided to write down some relations of my frequently used applications on my note book.
As mentioned in WIP#1 post, I wrote down a list of applications that is stalled in my phone to understand my phone better but I end up noticing my lifestyle by highlighting my frequently used applications. With the diagram above, I realised the applications I used can be divided into emotional and physical needs. How well do we understand a person? Do we know it as well as a phone knows it’s owner? This experiment gives the phone agencies to understand a person, a machine’s understanding might be better than a human’s understanding of a person.
- How to notice my lifestyle though frequently used application
- What does it tells you about me?
- Another way of understanding a person.
I will be using Moment , an application that tracks your screen time and the amount of time a user spend on their phone. Not very sure how this will go but it will definitely produce a data that shows how reliant humans are on their phones.
Rules
- Use List of frequently used applications
- Not allowed to show direct relations to the application phone – for example radio application: frequency waves?
Action: Draw a mini mind map for each application. Visual( 3rd or 4th circle from the main product)
- the first film is about a single thing you have that matters for you
I have to admit that no matter how I wish it wasn’t true, my phone is one of the most important thing in my life. Especially as an international student where you are so far away from family and friends- my phone keeps me connected with my loved ones. How well do I know my phone? not at all! I swear my phone knows me better than I knew it. I’ve decided to list down a list of applications that’s in my phone and see where it leads me. I split the applications to different category 1. Default apps 2.Social 3. Entertainment 4.Lifestyle 5.Travel 6.Finance 7.Others. I was surprised by the number of applications I’ve downloaded to my phone. there’s a total of 132 applications and i don’t use most of them. So I start to highlight the ones that are used frequently and the ones that I used once in awhile. I started off with the idea of understanding my phone but I end up trying to understand the relationship with my phone/ my lifestyle by highlighting the frequently used apps.
- the second film is about one activity and in that activity one key action that you do that matters for you
COOKING- tasting
What makes a good dish?
tasting is important because the final taste are affected by a lot of things- The cook( The cook’s experience) , the ingredients(lack of ingredients, additional ingredients) , the freshness of the ingredient( texture of ingredient) , the method, time, the heat, the quantity, different types of kitchen hardware used ( stainless steal etc.)
different methods of cutting- different knives used- different texture of the ingredient. Ingredient- how fine/coarse affects the final taste
freshness- high demand of fresh produce
meat- high water pollution ( Cowspiracy)
