Sound design

Although editing usually is thought of as the manipulation of time and imagery, it is no less about the manipulation of sound. Throughout the filming of Lost, it became clear that much of the natural sound was unreliable. It was for this reason that wild lines and atmos-tracks were relied upon heavily. A notable instance of this in the film is that of the insect and bird noises. Once again attesting to how cold the filming location was, no insects could be heard and the bird calls were far too distant to help with the mysterious feel I desired. For this reason, I recorded the cricket chirping sounds at an entirely different location: at a lower altitude were crickets did indeed live. I employed a similar technique for the birds, except instead of using audio from a different place, it was instead from a different time. The bird sounds that can be heard were in fact recorded in the morning when birds are usually more active.
