Assessment 2 – Reflection 1 – “Lenny”

The “Lenny” script was one that we looked at very early in the studio. Indeed, this media artifact was the first one I had ever filmed with the Sony news gathering-type cameras that we now use regularly. For this reason, the creation of the following sequence was done with the aim of beginning the process of mastering the equipment. These initial stages involved locating the basic image controls on these previously un-encountered cameras. These controls included gain, aperture and white balance presets.

The essential parts outlined in this piece of action are the movement of the character, the object under her arm and the character’s gaze. A particular point for consideration was how we could visually portray the “furtiveness” and the darting and “looking up” at the windows.

In order to make sure the viewer knew that the character was indeed looking up at the windows.  To fulfill this effect, we decided on a dynamic moving shot in which the perspective changed in parallel to the characters gaze. Thus, as the character looked up, the audience too would be exposed to what the character sees. In addition, the kinetic characteristics of the hand-held shot added an intended sense of franticness and uncertainty. This feeling was one that reflected the wider script.

Looking back over the process, I think the main objective (becoming familiar with the equipment) was fulfilled effectively. However, informed by 3 weeks of classes since this exercise, I realise that it would have been worthwhile to experiment with an entirely locked off camera instead of the crude handheld  technique. Also in reflection, I realise that too many cuts were done within the edit. With the new knowledge gained since starting the course, I realise the clip has a pace devoid of rhythm or fluidity. To fix this, I would space the cuts further apart, thus giving the audience greater opportunity to catch their breath.
