Teamwork: The Only Way To Do
“There’s a level of sophistication of filmmaking that’s mind-boggling. Anything you need for your movie, there’s an establishment that can make it happen really fast”
– Ang Lee
Not many worthwhile things happen without teamwork. This is true for any human endeavor in any discipline. Need to move a colossus? you’ll need a pal or two:
However, let’s forget about statues and move on to something a bit more relevant. A study conducted in 2014 by Stephen Follows analyzed the crews of the 50 highest grossing films from the last 20 years. He found that the average crew number for these 1000 films was 588 individuals. The film which had had the largest crew so far (in that data) was Iron Man 3 with 3,310 credited individuals.
The key to this massive collaboration in film production is the fact that people are split into departments. In this way, they can specialize; the biggest benefit of teamwork.
From these statistics, the fact that teamwork is the norm in film production is a no-brainer.
As a media practitioner, now is the time where I am weighing up which department I wish to inhabit. Though this is still not crystal clear ( I have ambitions though) I can be sure that I’ll be working among a great many others.
