A Little Bit of Me – Project Brief 2 by Michael Firus

Reflection:
The style of the clip is not obviously abstract and this is something which reflects my own personality. I see myself as somewhat practical, though still appreciative of abstraction. Thus, the clip tends towards symbolism which is not overriding. The extent of the symbolism comes with the “Mediated” scene in which one of my four stills shows my camera reflected in my glasses, alluding to how, through taking it everywhere, I receive my visual information as mediated by the camera’s video; second-hand. The very structure of the clip reflects my editing style– a style which is rhythmic through cutting on the beat, giving a fast paced and edgy feel.

What is immediately apparent in my clip is that I do a lot of moving: a lot of walking, commuting and “moving of cuts”. This is the main theme of the clip and also eludes to my recent and most significant move: the move from home which was 4 hours away from Melbourne.

The music also reflects who I am, or at least who I think I am to those who really know me. This is a mixture of some childlike immaturity (reflected in the child humming in the music) and (modesty forbids) a more competent, yet spritely and edgy demeanor (reflected in the upbeat electronic music.) My liking of the loud and exciting is countered in the sound editing to show appreciation for the serene through the duck feeding shot. I also added a quack in post to further hint at humor and immaturity but also to add a naturalistic feel. In that scene, I also put in the gag of the Messenger notification “disrupting” the serenity of my walk. This also hints at how I like to stay connected.

I think the biggest issue I had was fitting content into the restriction of ≈ 1 minute. This caused an abruptness in the ending which I would have liked to avoid by letting the music drift on. However, I was pleased with the overall pacing of the clip which very much reflected my editing style and to a certain extent, my personality.
