Through my self-portrait I seeked to express who I am through what I love.
I shot my footage using a gopro all around my local beach where I grew up. To put it quite simply, I feel more at home out at sea then I do anywhere on land. There’s something special about my relationship with the ocean. Almost like it’s told me a secret that I’m dying to spill but unsure how to communicate. So now I’m addicted to it’s sparkle and tranquility, but also to it’s mood swings and craziness. I can relate.
The main editing technique I drew on was the speeding up or slowing down of clips. This was the best way to create the ambiance I wanted. I used a collaboration of clips to express all the different elements and aspects of the sea, and my life, that I love. I filmed myself under the water as a way to convey how at home and true to myself I feel when I am there. I used footage of myself surfing as it is not only my source of pure joy, it also allows me to be creative and feel that raw sense of incomparable and adrenalin-rushing freedom.
Each of the photographs I chose to use in my self-portrait suited the feeling of the clip. Especially in the case of the first two images, which related to the written words describing the beauty and metaphor of watching a storm roll in. I took the photograps using a nikon and an iphone. They were each taken at different secret spots that I have.
The original audio recordings were selected favorite sounds of mine. The birds singing softly early in the morning, the powerful crash and roar of the wind and waves at the beach, and the beautiful songs that blear from the radio as I drive around windy roads with my friends.
I found this project challenging as movie-making and editing are definetly not skills I inherently possess. But I loved being forced to discover, explore, and develop my learning abilities in this type of medium.
