OTF – Final Project Update (part 1)

I know I haven’t been updating my journey in creating my final piece. But here it is:

After the feedback that we got from our 5 minute presentation of our ideas, I was still stuck on what my final project will consist of, but I know it was going to focus more on movement – in and within the frame. I had a few ideas up my sleeve.

#1 The first idea was to create two videos that will focus on movement and slow-motion. One video will focus on the movement IN the frame – recording different types of movements with a still camera on a tripod, and manipulating this movement by slowing it down to create a non-realistic shot. The other video will focus on the movement OF the frame itself – using dolly tracks and hand-held camera to move the frame around, changing it’s composition every time. I disregarded this idea because I felt as though it was just too much, in terms of technicality. I felt like I was doing too much.

#2 So I moved on and came up with a similar but different idea. In this one, it will be one video that will encompass both slow and fast motion. The video would start off slow, and gradually speed up as the film progress. Finally, it would end on a time lapse. This video, when I came up the idea, would focus on the aesthetics of slowing down and speeding up movement and time. Again, I thought that this video was just a compilation of just shots. There was really no narrative to it, and I felt I was just stitching together different footages, slow it down or speed it up and that was it.

#3 Then I came up with the last idea, which I am working on right now. This idea revolves around slowing down movement. It still has no linear narrative, in terms of beginning, middle and end, but it does have a direction. The video will show a soccer player displaying his soccer skills. However, the focus will not be about the skills, but the movement of the ball as it floats through the air, as it curves through the goals, and by slowing it down enough so that it seems frozen in time. This concept is accompanied by different shots that will be integrated in the video. There will be jump-cuts, but these cuts will serve as a mirror that reflects on the movement of the player and the movement of the ball.
