Reflection on filming …

I filmed on the Z7 camera this week, I initially went out with the intention of just filming some shots that were more of scenery and could portray metaphors. However going hand in hand with our entire topic I filmed whatever really came to me in the moment.

Using this new camera I found quite a struggle to begin with, I saw a nice shot on the bridge, the weather was beautiful but it took me a good 30 minutes to set up the camera as I couldn’t remember how to piece it together. After multiple messages to my group and reading the blog I figured most of it out. On my brief journey I started filming the city, trees, the river, people in their natural environment trying to capture what I thought was the moment. In terms of nature I tried to capture simplicity and a sense of calmness. For me being in the moment is being really focused on a sole thing and by truly capturing the details of that situation. Hence why I wanted to show really close up shots. Likewise with the people I wanted to try and get some footage where people didn’t know they were being filmed. Whilst I acknowledge this is probably unethical I though it was important to take note of in this process. Capturing people in moments where they are really unaware of their surroundings except in the task they are doing. For me this was an interesting thing to look at, the physically observe what it looks like to be in the ‘moment’ that my group and I have so often discussed. What are the mannerisms, body language and facial expressions that accompany this ideal.

Later on in the day I had a few spare hours and decided to catch up with a friend. I spontaneously brought the Z7 along just in case. We ended up finding this really beautiful spot, it was a car park on the top level overlooking the city, It was completely isolate no cars or people in sight and this inspired me to capture something. It allowed me to start asking my friend questions about the moment and grasp different interpretations of this idea of “the moment”. His view was in quite the contrast to what I had though and it had opened my eyes as well. The sun began setting and this allowed me to capture some really cool shots. A tripod would’ve been a useful tool to bring or some sort of stabiliser. Despite me thinking the shots were really good I put the footage back onto premiere and was horrified by how grainy it was. Little did I realise I filmed all my shots on the highest grain setting with the full filter on. An annoying mistake but one I will learn from and never make again. Now I have to reshoot which I plan to do this week, however I will refine it more taking a tripod and checking all the settings. This week I also plan to capture more people, in different and beautiful locations. My group today had a brief discussion on perhaps making the video more of a vignette and collation of footage of different people and their thoughts on this topic. Our idea is starting to mould and change even more as time progresses and the more we film. I know we will be able to pull it all together.

The next week will be interesting and quite critical in how our film develops but so far I’m enjoying the process. When I film next however I think I will use the EX3 and opposed to the Z7 just because I’m more familiar with it and as a whole I think it has a better quality picture.

Here are a few stills from the shoot, it is quite clear that the high grain setting and high filter create a very static and noisy shot. However I really like majority of the shots here and now I intend to recreate this footage but with vast improvements.
