Observation #11

Oblivion.

Living far away from the city has it’s down side, the hour and a half train journey, the fatigue and desire to just be home can really make the days hard. However every time I return late from the city I sleepily rest in my car as mum drives me home from the station. Usually this is around 9 or 10pm, stepping out into the icy cold weather I cant help but look up. The light on my front porch is broken so its a real struggle to see a lot. In fact getting the key into the key hole proves a real challenge every time. you would’ve thought we would’ve made the effort to change these lights especially seeing as my dad is an electrician and can single handedly do this in a matter of minutes.  Getting off track, but the reason I mention this is because due to the lack of light and the fact that I live so far away from the city means there is little light in my area. So due to this every night no matter the weather I look up to the sky. Its on the cloudless nights that I am in most awe off. Stars. They shine so brightly and the longer you look at them the more that appear. Such blissful serenity. Another world. I have a tendency to imagine other worlds up there, the clusters of galaxies filled with millions of stars. Whenever I think of this I also think back to the Doctor Who episode where they meet Van Gogh and they look up to the stars and it merges into his painting “Starry Night”. I love the idea of how something so far away can shine so bright. I love the unknown and the ambiguity of it all, what out there, the fact that we live in the universe yet most of us never get to go out and explore it.

FILM IDEA:

I have always had a fascination with stars and the night. Perhaps an ambitious film idea but I really wanted to incorporate something to do with the beauty and isolation of the universe. I envision perhaps starting this off similar to my observation a person in a car, confusing shots through windows/reflections/different lights and shadows to communicate the ambiguity of the situation. Perhaps the subject sitting in the passenger seat looks up or out through the window where the camera (in my head i envision a drone) lifting higher and higher making this individual seem small. I think we so often think that the stars are so far away but I also want to focus on how small and minute we as humans are. I would perhaps want to try and communicate how expansive our world is by focusing on the smallness off us as humans. I would want to incorporate lots of night time shots of the stars, of people from afar. All shot at night to really give that secluded feeling.
