Monday Class Reflection

So in today’s class we were given a short scene and in small groups we had to shoot it and decide how to set up the lighting in order to achieve the lighting described in the script.

As a group we split into specified areas, 2 on camera, 2 on lighting, 2 on acting and 1 on sound. As a whole we decided that because it was intended to be night time we wanted to create a moody and ominous look.
the overall scene involved two characters one was waiting for someone and the other came in to tell them they’ve left already. So with the whole set up we had we had to light two characters in the same shot.
To do this the lighting crew set up 2 dido lights with diffusers over them, on as a back head light and the other opposite lighting the front side. In addition to this light was the computer light. After looking at this setup we found that it was a bit too hard and perhaps more ambient light would be more suitable and natural. So another light (LED) was set up in the back of the room facing slightly upwards to give a bit of room warmth. To make it feel warmer and more natural we added an orange gel to ensure a softer, warm light was reflecting of the roof. Once satisfied with this lighting on the first actor (myself) they then added another dido light onto the second subject who was entering from the door.
We decided to stick to one shot just to keep it simple as I don’t think they found it necessary to overcomplicate with a multitude of angles.
I think in terms of the lighting the overall look could’ve been achieved slightly easier. I thought of two options that could’ve perhaps created the same effect.
  • the first was sitting slightly near to the window, we were positioned right at the back of the room but nearer the window was slightly more light which with the coverings on the windows looked similar to moonlight. However a limitation to this is that the door is far away.
  • secondly in looking for slightly more ambient light we couldn’t pegged up some corner of the blind to bring in a bit more light. Maybe cover this area with an orange gel.
Sometimes I think using the natural light could’ve helped the natural look if that was our intention.
Overall we worked well and we did very well in terms of sticking to the time frame. I think sticking to time is really important in terms of shooting and allowing time for what you want to achieve and I think we did this well.
