manual camera test shoot

Here are a few unedited shots I took last week for a friend who is progressing with her music career.

We went up to Arthur’s seat and took some photos amongst nature, she really wanted some portraits within the environment.

I have said in a previous blog reflection that I felt like I wasn’t progressing because I never got the chance to really try directing or camera operating in the class exercises. I also felt like I really couldn’t comprehend the basics of a camera, in both film and photography. I really struggled to understand how shutter speed, ISO, white balance, exposure, f.stop all worked. No matter how many times I was told I just couldn’t understand so when I went out to take a few of these images I worked really hard to understand the manual setting.

On this day I set the ISO to 100 because it was a super hard light outside, I set the f.stop to a low number like 2 – 4 this allowed me to have a shallow depth of field (blurry background)  and then I set a high shutter speed to capture a well exposed image.

Despite still struggling a little bit I think I finally understand the basic concept of how to manually use a camera which I think will really help with my future shoots. Obviously not all the shots worked out well some were overexposed and and some were underexposed but generally I think i did well in terms of lighting and depth of field.
