Wednesday Class Reflection

On Wednesday we took a few moments out of class to trial out some depth of field.

This exercise I really loved doing, it gave a physicality to what we spoke about in class. It allowed to me to understand that to achieve a close up with shallow depth of field (blurry) I have to position the subject further away from the camera and zoom in whereas if i wanted to achieve a greater depth of field I would position the subject close to camera.

During the shoot, we both helped operate the camera for me being the subject. This trial i think worked out the best, the composition was good, I would’ve positioned the second shot (with shallow depth of field) a bit more centred. I think overall the exposure is really nice.

As for the second trial we did, which I really dislike I think the lower angle really didn’t work out well.

The light that reflected of the windows in the alleyway made it super difficult to find the right exposure on the subject and the background. A reflector would’ve helped alleviate this from happening a little.

I think that the focus was off, I don’t think I gave myself enough time behind the camera to get it right. I really don’t like the angle of the shot, I think it draws away from the overall composition.

As for the depth of field I don’t think it was as well achieved as the first trial with me as the subject, this I think was because of the angle and because the subject wasn’t as far away which didn’t allow enough of a zoom in.

Overall I really loved doing this exercise it made me understand what we talk about in class. I think I would like to retrial this to improve on the things that didn’t work well in the first trial.

I need to consider more of the following which each and every shot

  • lighting, natural and artificial
  • exposure
  • angle and composition
  • focus and depth of field
