As I wasn’t in class, I didn’t do exercise 1 Part 2, however I will analyse one of the shots on soft light and I will also incorporate one of my own stills of soft light.
It looks like the soft light was create via a reflector to even out the light and bounce back any direct light to eliminate shadows
Review the interview you shot for Exercise 1 Part 2 and reflect upon its characteristics, qualities, and any elements you might change. What did you learn when manipulating the soft light on your subject?
In both of these shots Ive had a look at I’ve decided to read more off the black and white images. I think the light is more noticeable gives an overall nice effect.
With the first image the soft lighting created i very delicate and quite beautiful. I really like how the lighting coming the the right side (not directly) and it wraps around the face softly. Im assuming a reflector was used to bounce back some of that light on her lower left cheek and top of her left eye which again produces an even ofter light. I think by using this soft light audiences gain a real innocence and calmness. Overall I think this shot is really well composed and the exposure seems really good, I would perhaps ad a bit more headroom just to create that bit more space.
I have definitely seen how the soft light is enhanced with a reflector to allow a softer covering of light which creates a light scene. I think also the black background allows for the light to be more focused and removes any back light giving off more light.
This second photo has more background light, which allows for a bit of lighting from behind and the left side of his face, This shot has a more spread lighting, from both the right and the left side.
Between the two shots I prefer the first I think the dark background adds softness and i think it highlights a more even spread of light.
Despite missing class that day I will definitely take note on what other people have down and will attempt some trials myself to see what works out best.
The image below is also a photo i recently took that I think fits with what I have been talking about. This image uses soft natural light from an overcast day and I think positions the subject in a really endearing and innocent way.
