mirror, tracking and trunk shot test.

My previous post noted how I wanted to recreate the blood/trunk shot scene. I’ve been having difficulty getting this shot looking good.  This time instead of putting the camera on a tripod on a low angle we literally placed the camera in a car trunk, I really love this effect far more than the previous trial. I think by using this angle it gives the right height and depth of shot, in my previous test I had just one test subject, whereas in this trial I tested with two people which is what the script requires. I think this would be the best angle to use for our final project, as for the blood part, we tested two parts. The first being tomato sauce, the consistency was much better than the previous however there were many down sides.

  • The first being we only had 2 people, I couldn’t be both in it and squeeze the blood (sauce) out.
  • Secondly not enough the blood substance doesn’t explode out enough. I really wanted a large explosion like an artery thats been cut, this however was harder to achieve than I thought.
  • It doesn’t show up on screen as easily as I thought
  • Perhaps getting an extra two people sit in the boot and squeeze the fake blood out might work out better

Another thing; I cannot act so making these test shoots is purely for testing out the best way a shot will work out,  trialling out the best angles and creating a visual shot list so when we film its less experimental and more refining a really good shot. I also took time experimenting will colour grading in post production and seeing how the shots flowed together.

Another thing I want to point out is that I think having 2 people in the shot really adds depth to the shot, I think it would look really good when shooting this to have the character vomit in the background whilst the main subject is “chopping” up parts of the body.

This mirror test I think was really good to test out as Im able to reflect on it and see where I went wrong. Obviously ignoring the acting within this one. The mirror scene I want to see who to get the shots of both character without getting the camera in the reflection, the obscurity of the door helped with this. Something feels very stinted within this scene, shot wise. I think what was need is two over the shoulder shots to make this a bit smoother but I also think having the camera of the male subject a bit more over the shoulder would be more effective as a way to showcase continuity and flow. Perhaps having a tighter shot would also help with this and making both shots very similar would benefit the scene even more.

this is what I did..

this is what the first tv show I came across did…

I would’ve also like to do another few takes so I could include a bit before hand where I’m looking in the mirror, the male subject comes into the shot, I turn around and then we cut to a close up of the male subject. This is what was intended in the script however the shots didn’t flow when we shot it that way. Tracking down the hallway I like, this was difficult again to achieve how I envisioned purely due to the lack of people I had to help out and so we had to improvise with both acting and filming.
