a little edit and slo mo test

SO whilst this short video wasn’t intentionally created for our film, I still used the footage as a really good way to practice both my colour grading and editing skills.

My partner filmed the footage on a Sony A7 the lighting in the space was quite dark and we had sparklers and a few lamps were in the bar. Some of the shots were shot in 100fps so when editing I was able to change this to 25fps meaning that the slow motion shots were in 4k resolution.

I took a look at the footage and pieced together two short little videos, one was using the slow motion and the other wasn’t, I think what I’ve learnt is how slow motion can really capture the attention of viewers. It almost feels like a breath where you can take in all the information and just feel the vibe of the shot. After editing both videos I definitely see the benefits of slow motion in creating an atmosphere shot, it enhance the feeling thats trying to be communicated.

I think I will perhaps look at ways in which slow motion could perhaps be incorporated into our film whether thats a slow motion walk, which could help with the comedy and stylistic element or even slow motion facial expressions of the cutting of the body could perhaps be an interesting idea.

we also played with some more depth of field shots which again I love and think are super effective in getting a more cinematic shot.

overall this was a really nice little test for me to do in terms of editing together a sequence of shots, figuring out slow motion shots and how they fit in to the video well. I was also able to enhance some of the shots by adding more depth and colour with a little bit of exposure to create a more visually vibrant and engaging shot.

I think as well I also want to note how its really nice working with light within the shot, not over complicating the movements, we used the sparklers and interior lighting to make the shots really warm and celebratory which I really love.

Here is the video edited without slow motion which as you can see doesn’t quite have the same vibe or effect.
