COLOUR CORRECTION

DAD RIDING BIKE CLIP

The first edit I did to this shot was lightening the clip a little, as a whole the light is coming from the left hand side so this automatically gave the shot some shadow under the eye and around the nose. I quite like that this shot has a bit of tone in it as it adds a bit more depth to the piece. However I trialled heighten both the contrast and the exposure to see how this would look as a lighter image. This also lightened the skin tone, overall I do like this minor adjustment and I think this could come in handy for any type of film this clip could go into, I think that its nice the shadow is still there despite a rise in the exposure.

With the second piece I experimented with adding in more darkness, for something a little more dangerous and bold. I heightened the contrast and took away the red/orange tones to the piece. This really added a bit more depth and could be enhanced even more so the image is harder to depict. This I think it incorporates a darker element which can be used in a different variety of sequences. It was nice trialling with what would and wouldn’t work to make a shot have a bit more darkness to it.

Likewise with the last shot I didn’t change much except for the tone, I added a green tinge again this could be useful for a certain feeling. Perhaps jealousy of again a darker vibe to a shot. I really love the shadows it creates as the tone doesn’t wash out the whole shot but picks ups the lighter areas, meaning that the change in tone isn’t as overwhelming as it might have been in a lighter shot.

A CHILD PLAYING CLIP

The original photo itself is a close up shot of a baby with a very colourful background. This is a shot I probably wouldn’t use a lot of colour correction on because as an image I think it has a lot vibrance and depth already. However the one thing I would do to enhance it would be to lighten it a little just to bring a bit more colour and warmth to the shot. To achieve this as shown in the second picture I just upped the exposure and contrast a little, then added more highlight and shadow so the skin is lifted and so it the background. I think in some ways this adds a softer element to the shot and could also be used to communicate a really high energy piece.

The second trial I did (on the first photo on the second line) I really didn’t like. However I played around with creating a shot that looks a little darker and a little more subdued. So I added a creative lut on it called SL BLEACH HDR. I also lowered the contrast and the shadows and vibrancy. I feel like this type of shot would work more in a flashback sequence or a horror scene. It has a darker feel to it, the face has very little colour and overall doesn’t give off a warm vibe.

The third shot (the last photo in the box) I wanted to try going overboard on the tone spectrum and see if the effects looked good in any way. So I upped the temperature to orange and lowered the tint to a greener colour. I also heightened all the highlights and shadows and lowered the contrast and exposure. This is turn gave a very yellow/orange image that was supposed to be warming but almost has come across a little sickly. Again I feel like this could suit a flashback sequence or if my intent was for a short film to feel overly warm and a little over dramatic I could use this as a way to project that. I feel like this shot would work best with a little less change. If I were to use this shot I would make it a little lighter whilst showing some of the warmth.

MONTY THE DOG CLIP

First photo is the original.

TRIAL 1.  For the first trial I really wanted to work on lifting up the light, putting in some contrast and taking away the yellow hue in the image. I trialled a bit with the shadow and highlight tint and this really helped me achieve this lighter more white tones image. I brought up the blues a little and I feel like this assisted in making the shot more endearing and light and clean, I really like that although simple it really lifted the image.

TRIAL 2. With this second trial I put on a creative style to it, I added in the Fuji Eterna 250D to trial this out. I found this was way to orange and yellow, so I brought this down a bit whilst keeping the warms tones of the shot, I also lightened the background a little without making it as light as the previous. This really added a warm and softer tone to the shot, and helps show that its inside with a warmer light.’

TRIAL 3. This one I tried to steer away from warm and went for a more green tone, this shot I really don’t like but I wanted to trial out the colour of it all. the whole shot feels a bit off and too green, perhaps if the sequence was wanting this off vibe to it, it could perhaps work. However I don’t think its very flattering for the dog. The blacks as well aren’t very black, i found it hard to maintain the texture of the dogs fur whilst it looks black. The more blacks i added the texture and highlights often dropped off. Overall this is not my favourite but I wanted to trial the different tints.
